Commuter was charged different fares when he transferred from and alighted at the same bus stops using different bus services

Mr Koh took a train to Ang Mo Kio station. He proceeded to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 where he transferred to bus service 853. He alighted at the very next bus stop and noticed that no fare was deducted from his card.

The following day, he took bus service 162 from the same bus stop at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 and alighted at the same bus stop he alighted at the day before. For this trip, a fare of $0.01 was deducted.

On another day, he made the same trip but took bus service 135 instead. This time, the fare was $0.04. For all these three bus trips of 0.4km, he had transferred from a train ride but his journey started at a different MRT station.

Explanation
Under Distance Fares, fares are calculated based on the total cumulative distance travelled in a journey.
Hence, for an MRT-bus journey, the fare charged for the bus leg can vary depending on the distance already travelled on the preceding MRT leg.  It can be zero if the additional bus trip does not result in the total journey distance crossing over to the next fare band. If it does, then the fare for the air-conditioned bus leg could range from $0.01 to $0.10 for a 0.4km trip, as in Mr Koh’s case.

To illustrate, here are two examples.

Example 1:

Journey

Distance

 Fares

Yio Chu Kang MRT station to Ang Mo Kio MRT station

1.5km

$0.71

Transfers to bus service 853 and alights at the next bus stop

0.4km

$0.00
There is no additional fare for the bus ride as the total distance travelled on the MRT and bus is 1.9km, and this is within the first fare band of 3.2km.

Example 2:

Journey

Distance

 Fares

Woodlands MRT station to Ang Mo Kio MRT station

15km

$1.45

Transfers to bus service 135 and alights at the next bus stop

0.4km

$0.04
The total distance travelled is 15.4km. This crosses over to the next fare band of 15.3km. Hence, the fare for the bus leg is $0.04.
